Education Cloud is Salesforce's industry product for education institutions. Salesforce documents four main areas: recruitment and admissions, academic operations (CRM plus what Salesforce calls a "next-gen SIS", or student information system), student success and advancement.

That scope covers the whole student lifecycle, from first enquiry to alumni giving. This guide explains what Salesforce documents, who it suits, how it connects with Data 360, Agentforce and Marketing Cloud, and what to plan before you buy.

What Education Cloud adds on top of the core clouds

Sales Cloud and Service Cloud are general products. Education Cloud adds education-specific processes:

  • Recruitment and admissions: managing prospective students and applications.
  • Academic operations: CRM plus next-gen SIS capability for running academic processes.
  • Student success: supporting current students with advising and support.
  • Advancement: alumni relations and fundraising.
  • Winter '27 additions: Salesforce's release highlights list Delegated Access, Transfer Credit and Refunds/Payment Plans. No status was stated in the material we reviewed, so confirm availability before you plan around them.

Who it suits

It suits universities, colleges and other institutions that want admissions, student support and advancement in one platform. The SIS capability matters most to institutions reviewing their student records system. Institutions that keep an existing SIS can still use the CRM areas, but integration becomes central.

How it connects with Data 360, Agentforce and Marketing Cloud

  • Data 360 (formerly Data Cloud) can unify data from the SIS, learning platforms and web activity into student and alumni profiles.
  • Agentforce agents can be grounded in CRM and Data 360 data, for example to answer common student questions. Keep the Einstein Trust Layer controls, such as data masking, in mind for student data.
  • Marketing Cloud runs recruitment and alumni journeys. Account Engagement or Marketing Cloud Next may also fit, depending on how you work.

Planning considerations

  • Data model fit: map applicants, students, programmes, courses and alumni to the standard model before customising.
  • SIS decision: decide early whether Education Cloud's SIS capability replaces your current system or whether you integrate with it. This shapes the whole project.
  • Privacy: student data is sensitive. Agree access rules, Delegated Access needs and consent handling up front.
  • Licensing questions to ask Salesforce: which areas are included in your edition; whether SIS capability is separate; how students, applicants and alumni are licensed as users; and how Data 360, Agentforce and Marketing Cloud are licensed alongside.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with recruitment marketing before the applicant data model is agreed.
  • Leaving the SIS integration decision until late.
  • Running separate, unconnected Salesforce orgs for admissions and advancement.

Questions we hear

Does Education Cloud replace our student information system?
Salesforce describes next-gen SIS capability. Whether it replaces your current system depends on your needs, so assess it carefully.
Can we use Education Cloud only for admissions?
You can start with one area. Plan the data model for the full lifecycle so later phases fit.
Are Transfer Credit and Payment Plans available now?
Salesforce lists them in Winter '27 highlights without a stated status in the material we reviewed. Check Salesforce Help.
Which marketing product should we use?
It depends on volume and style. Marketing Cloud suits large-scale journeys; compare options before buying.
