Field Service and Operations guide
A practical guide to Salesforce Field Service and Operations, formerly Field Service Lightning: scheduling, mobile work and planning advice.

Field Service and Operations is Salesforce's product for planning and running on-site work: scheduling technicians, dispatching jobs and giving mobile workers what they need to finish the job first time. It was long known as Field Service Lightning, then as "Agentforce Field Service" after October 2025. Trailhead still says "Field Service Cloud" in places, and pricing uses "Agentforce 1 Field Service", but the product page and Salesforce's products grid use Field Service and Operations.
What it is for
The product connects the customer request (usually a case or a planned maintenance event) to the person who does the work, the parts they need and the record of what happened. It suits operations where travel time, skills, parts and appointment windows all matter.

How it connects with other Salesforce products
- Service Cloud is the usual front door: a case becomes a work order when someone needs to visit.
- Sales Cloud and Revenue Cloud hold the contracts and assets that define service entitlements.
- Data 360 can bring in device or usage data from outside Salesforce.
- Industry clouds such as Energy & Utilities Cloud build on field service for sector processes.
- Back-office systems (ERP, inventory) usually need an integration for parts and billing.
Who it suits
Organisations with mobile workforces: equipment manufacturers, installers, utilities, telecoms, facilities management and healthcare equipment providers. Our manufacturing and logistics industry pages cover common patterns.
Planning an implementation
- Scheduling rules. Write down how dispatchers decide today: skills, territories, travel limits, priorities and appointment windows.
- Work order model. Agree work types, durations and required parts.
- Mobile experience. Decide what technicians must capture on site and test it offline.
- Assets and entitlements. Decide where installed-asset and contract data lives.
- Integrations. Plan the ERP, inventory and billing connections early, since they often set the timeline.
Common mistakes
- Turning on optimisation before territories, skills and durations are accurate.
- Designing the mobile app in the office and never testing in a basement or a van.
- Leaving parts and inventory integration until the end.
- Treating voice and agent features as essential before they are proven in your org.
