Tableau and Tableau Next guide
Tableau now spans classic Tableau products and Tableau Next, an agentic analytics layer on the Salesforce Platform and Data 360.

Tableau is Salesforce's analytics brand. It covers the long-established products, Tableau Cloud, Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop, and the newer Tableau Next, which runs on the Salesforce Platform and Data 360. On salesforce.com you may also see the label "Agentforce Tableau", but the product is still Tableau, and salesforce.com/tableau redirects to tableau.com.
What it is for
Tableau is for analysis that goes beyond standard Salesforce reports and dashboards. That might mean combining CRM data with finance or product data, giving analysts self-service exploration, or sharing governed dashboards across a business. Tableau Next adds an API-first, agentic approach aimed at putting analytics into the flow of work, including Slack.
Core capabilities
| Product or feature | What it does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tableau Cloud | Hosted Tableau for publishing and sharing analytics | Salesforce-managed |
| Tableau Server | Self-managed Tableau | For organisations that host it themselves |
| Tableau Desktop | Authoring application | tableau.com says Desktop is now free |
| Tableau Next | API-first, agentic analytics on the Salesforce Platform and Data 360 | Slack-integrated |
| Tableau Semantics | Shared business definitions for metrics | Announced October 2025 |
| Tableau Agent and Tableau MCP | AI assistance, and MCP access to Tableau | Tableau MCP arrived in Summer '26 |
| Tableau Knowledge and Tableau Studio | Newer Winter '27 additions | Status not stated by Salesforce |
| Tableau+ | A bundle that includes Tableau Next | Check edition contents with Salesforce |
Licensing, as Salesforce states it
Salesforce says Tableau Next is sold standalone or in the Tableau+ bundle, and is "included in certain Salesforce Editions (Core, Advanced, Max)". We don't quote prices, because Salesforce says pricing and packaging can change. Confirm what your contract includes before you plan around it.
How it connects
Tableau Next uses Data 360 as its data foundation, so the quality of your unified data model directly shapes your analytics. Salesforce also uses Tableau Next dashboards inside other products. Revenue Cloud and Health Cloud referral management both reference Tableau Next dashboards. Classic Tableau connects to Salesforce and many other sources through connectors. CRM Analytics, formerly Tableau CRM and Einstein Analytics, is a separate product.
Who it suits
Organisations with analysts who need more than standard reports, leaders who want one view across CRM and other systems, and Data 360 customers who want analytics on the same unified data.
Planning an implementation
- 01
Agree the questions
List the decisions dashboards must support before choosing tools.
- 02
Define metrics once
Agree definitions for revenue, pipeline or churn so every dashboard matches.
- 03
Fix the data first
Check source quality and identity resolution if you use Data 360.
- 04
Decide the product
Choose between classic Tableau, Tableau Next and native reports based on users and data.
- 05
Plan governance
Decide who publishes, who certifies data sources and how access follows CRM permissions.
Common mistakes
- Rebuilding every Salesforce report in Tableau when native reports would do.
- Letting each team define the same metric differently.
- Buying analytics before the underlying data is reliable.
- Treating Winter '27 additions with no stated status as generally available.
