Marketing Cloud Engagement guide
Marketing Cloud Engagement is Salesforce's B2C platform for email, SMS and journeys. Here is what it does and how to plan for it.

Marketing Cloud Engagement is Salesforce's B2C cross-channel marketing product for email, SMS and multi-step journeys. It grew out of ExactTarget and runs on its own platform, separate from the core Salesforce org, which is the main difference from Marketing Cloud Next. Many high-volume senders still run their lifecycle and promotional messaging on it.
What it is for
Engagement suits organisations that send large volumes of personalised messages to consumers and need detailed control over data, content and timing. Typical uses are welcome series, abandoned basket reminders, transactional messages, newsletters and win-back programmes.
Core capabilities
| Area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Journeys | Journey Builder for multi-step, event-driven customer journeys |
| Automation | Automation Studio for scheduled imports, SQL queries and file transfers |
| Data | Contact Builder and data extensions for customer and event data |
| Content | Email and SMS content with AMPscript personalisation |
| Integration | Marketing Cloud Connect to Salesforce CRM, plus APIs |
| AI tooling | A Marketing Cloud Engagement MCP server with 40 tools (Winter '27) |
How it connects with other Salesforce products
Marketing Cloud Connect synchronises contacts, leads and campaign data between Engagement and Sales or Service Cloud. Data 360 can activate segments to Engagement, so unified profiles drive sends; see activating Data Cloud segments to Marketing Cloud. Existing customers can renew into Engagement+, which Salesforce says adds Marketing Cloud Next capabilities.
Who it suits
- B2C brands in retail, travel, media and financial services with large audiences.
- Teams with technical marketers who are comfortable with SQL, AMPscript and data modelling.
- Organisations with established Engagement builds that want to keep them while adding newer features.
Planning an implementation
- 01
Model your data
Design data extensions, primary keys and sendable relationships before building content.
- 02
Set up sending
Configure sender authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and IP or domain warm-up.
- 03
Connect the CRM
Decide which objects sync and how often through Marketing Cloud Connect.
- 04
Build and test journeys
Test entry sources, splits and exits with seed data before activation.
- 05
Monitor
Track deliverability, errors and engagement using data views.
Common mistakes
- Creating data extensions without primary keys or retention policies, which leads to duplicates and slow queries.
- Skipping sender authentication, which hurts deliverability; see our SPF, DKIM and DMARC guide.
- Activating journeys without testing every path.
- Syncing every CRM field "just in case", which adds load and confusion.
