Marketing Cloud is Salesforce's family of marketing products rather than a single application. The name covers B2C messaging, B2B automation, real-time personalisation, marketing analytics, loyalty and the newer Marketing Cloud Next, which runs on the core Salesforce platform with Data 360. This guide explains what each product does and how to decide which one, or which combination, fits your organisation.

What it is for

Marketing Cloud products help teams plan, send, personalise and measure marketing across email, SMS, mobile, web and paid media, using customer data that is connected to your CRM. After the October 2025 rebrand Salesforce briefly marketed the family as "Agentforce Marketing". The salesforce.com/marketing/ page now uses the heading "Marketing Cloud" again, and the Agentforce label mostly survives in URLs.

How to choose

  • New to Salesforce marketing. Salesforce says new customers start with Marketing Cloud Next, in Growth Edition or Advanced Edition. Edition contents and pricing change, so confirm them with Salesforce before you budget.
  • Existing Engagement, Account Engagement, Personalization or Intelligence customers. Salesforce offers "+" versions on renewal (Engagement+, Account Engagement+, Personalization+, Intelligence+) that add Marketing Cloud Next capabilities, so you can adopt new features without a full rebuild on day one.
  • B2B with a sales-led pipeline. Compare Account Engagement with Marketing Cloud Next using our B2B comparison guide.
  • High-volume B2C messaging with mature data extensions and AMPscript. Engagement remains a strong fit; see Marketing Cloud Next vs Engagement.

How it connects with other Salesforce products

Data 360 sits underneath Marketing Cloud Next and Salesforce Personalization, supplying unified profiles, segments and activation. Sales Cloud and Service Cloud provide the leads, contacts, opportunities and cases that marketing acts on. Agentforce supplies marketing agents, such as the Agentforce Content Agent (Winter '27) and the Marketing Goals Agent, which Salesforce lists as a pilot.

Who it suits

Organisations that already run Salesforce CRM and want marketing to share the same customer data, consent and reporting. Smaller teams usually start with one product and one or two channels; larger groups often run several products side by side.

Planning a Marketing Cloud programme

  1. 01

    Audit what you have

List channels, data sources, journeys, automations, integrations and send volumes.

  2. 02

    Decide the data foundation

Agree whether Data 360 or your CRM is the source of customer profiles and segments.

  3. 03

    Design consent early

Map subscriptions, preferences and legal bases before building journeys.

  4. 04

    Choose product and edition

Match use cases to products, then confirm current editions with Salesforce.

  5. 05

    Phase the rollout

Launch one high-value journey first, measure it, then expand.

Common mistakes

  • Buying licences before mapping use cases to specific products.
  • Treating Marketing Cloud Next as a version upgrade of Engagement. It runs on a different platform, so data models, content and automations need redesign.
  • Leaving consent and preference design until the end.
  • Using retired names in RFPs, which confuses vendors and slows evaluation.
