Data and privacy rules to plan for
The Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) is regulated by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC). It's mid-reform:

Points that touch a Salesforce org:
- Cross-border transfers. Consent-based transfers require telling people the destination country, its protection system and the importer's safeguards. Your hosting region and any vendor access from abroad, including ours from India, should be in that picture.
- Breach reporting. Send the PPC a prompt preliminary report, then a final report within 30 days, or 60 days for breaches likely caused for improper purposes such as cyberattacks. Triggers include sensitive data, risk of financial harm and more than 1,000 people affected.
- Marketing email falls under the Act on Regulation of Transmission of Specified Electronic Mail, which the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications publishes in English. It's largely opt-in: get prior consent, with limited exceptions, keep consent records, show the sender's name and an opt-out address, and stop after an opt-out.
Check with your legal adviser, particularly on the 2028 changes, whose start date isn't set yet.
Salesforce data residency: Hyperforce Japan
Japan is a Hyperforce hosting location in Salesforce's Infrastructure and Sub-processors document, and Salesforce already listed Japan among its Hyperforce countries in 2021. Salesforce notes that not all services are available in every location.
