AMPscript Studio MCP (Proposal)
A proposal for how GM1X AMPscript Studio could connect to MCP-enabled AI clients, with code execution, credentials and deployment kept behind controls.

GM1X AMPscript Studio is a browser-based AMPscript workspace run by GeekMidst at gm1x.geekmidst.com/AMPscript-Studio; see the AMPscript Studio tool page. Many developers now write code alongside an AI client. This page sets out how Studio could expose its functions to MCP-enabled AI clients, and what we would deliberately keep out of reach. Nothing here is built yet.
The business use case
AMPscript runs at send time in email, CloudPages, SMS and MobilePush, so mistakes show up late, in front of subscribers. Developers want help in the loop: a first draft, an explanation of inherited code, a check before a test send, and test cases that cover the edge conditions. An MCP connection would let them get that help in the AI client they already use, with the same checks every time.
Is there a vendor server?
Salesforce runs the Marketing Cloud Engagement MCP Server, GA since 2 June 2026, which reads and writes Marketing Cloud objects under the user's rights. It is Salesforce's server, not ours, and it does not replace a code workspace. In this design, Studio's server stays separate and read-only, and any change in Marketing Cloud goes through the vendor server with the user's confirmation, or by hand. Details are on the Marketing Cloud MCP page.
Proposed architecture
This is a proposed design; we validate the APIs, edition and permissions for each implementation.

Components and data flows (text version)
| Component | Type | Responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| AMPscript developerworks in an AI client | People | Asks for drafts, explanations and checks, and decides what, if anything, goes to Marketing Cloud. |
| MCP hostAI client or IDE | AI and agents | Connects to the proposed Studio server and, separately, to any vendor server. Holds write calls until the user confirms. |
| Studio MCP serverproposed, read-only | Integration layer | Proposed server exposing Studio functions as read-only tools. It holds no Marketing Cloud credentials. |
| Engagement MCP Servervendor-run, optional | Salesforce product | Salesforce's own server, GA 2 Jun 2026. Only used if the team chooses, under the user's OAuth and with approval. |
| Documentation indexapproved sources | Data and analytics | AMPscript references and your team's standards, used for cited answers. |
| Static analyserparse only, no execution | Identity, policy and governance | Parses code and reports issues and risky patterns. It never executes AMPscript. |
| Test-case generatorsuggestions only | Integration layer | Suggests input rows and expected output for a person to run in a test send. |
| Engagement tenantnot reached by Studio | Salesforce product | Content and data in Marketing Cloud, reachable only through the vendor server under the user's rights. |
Data flows
- AMPscript developer → MCP host: requests. Drafts and checks run directly; anything that saves to Marketing Cloud needs the user's confirmation.
- MCP host → Studio MCP server: read-only tool calls. Code text in, explanations and findings out. Annotated readOnlyHint true.
- MCP host → Engagement MCP Server: optional, confirmed writes. A separate connection the team may choose. Writes wait for confirmation; production deployment stays a human step.
- Studio MCP server → Documentation index: search. Returns cited passages from the approved index.
- Studio MCP server → Static analyser: parse. A parse failure returns a tool error, never a silent pass.
- Studio MCP server → Test-case generator: suggest tests. Produces test data suggestions; nothing is sent.
- Engagement MCP Server → Engagement tenant: user OAuth access. Rights equal the package scopes intersected with the user's permissions.
Proposed tool and resource catalogue
| Tool or resource | Purpose | Read/write | Approval needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| generate_draft | Return a draft AMPscript block from a brief | Read (returns a draft) | Developer reviews |
| explain_code | Explain what a block does, line by line | Read | No |
| analyse_code | Static analysis: syntax issues, unused variables, risky patterns | Read | No |
| search_docs | Cited passages from the documentation index | Read | No |
| validate_code | Parse-only validation of AMPscript syntax | Read | No |
| generate_test_cases | Suggest input rows and expected output | Read | No |
| workflow_checklist (prompt) | A pre-send checklist for a change | Read | No |
| Docs resources | Documentation pages exposed as MCP resources | Read | No |
| Deploy or send | Push code or send in Marketing Cloud | Write | Not in Studio's server; vendor server with confirmation |
Execution boundaries
- No code execution. Validation parses text and reports findings; it never runs AMPscript, renders against subscriber data or calls Marketing Cloud.
- No credential access. Studio's server holds no Marketing Cloud credentials and accepts none. If a user pastes a token or password, the tools reject the input rather than process it.
- No production deployment. Saving or deploying is outside Studio's server. Workflow automation means checklists and handoffs, not actions in your tenant.
Authentication and access control
If the server only serves public documentation and stateless analysis, it could run without authentication, like the read-only MCP server on this website, with rate limiting and Origin validation. If it ever reads a user's saved Studio workspace, it becomes an OAuth 2.1 resource server under the MCP authorization spec, validating that each token was issued for it and accepting no other tokens.
Read and write operations, and approvals
Every tool in the proposal is read-only and annotated readOnlyHint: true. Drafts are returned to the developer, not saved anywhere. Any write happens outside this server, through the vendor server with confirmation, and production deployment stays a human step after a test send, as in testing journeys before activation.
Data privacy
Code often contains field names and sometimes sample values. The design would process submitted code in memory, keep an anonymous request log without arguments, and advise developers not to paste subscriber data. Check with your legal adviser on the rules that apply to you.
Limits, auditability and errors
We would rate limit per address and publish the limits. The log would record tool, outcome and timing, without code. Parse failures return isError: true with the position and reason; unknown tools return a protocol error.
Environments, testing and deployment
We would test with the MCP Inspector CLI and the official SDKs, as we did for this website's server, including deliberately broken scripts, and release behind a feature flag. Status would be published in our catalogue as Planned until it is built.
Licensing and dependencies
Studio's proposed server would need no Salesforce licence. Using the vendor server alongside it needs Marketing Cloud Engagement and an Installed Package.
